Well, actually there wasn't much labor put into our little garden. Back in April the boys and I planted a few seeds, some that came up and some that didn't. But that didn't matter. I just wanted the boys to see the process...to see where some of their fruits and veggies came from.
We had a bunch of lettuce come up right away, which made me happy because I wanted the boys to have some instant gratification. Then the broccoli came in nice and strong. Now, mind you, I haven't the green thumb that other people do, so I didn't even consider when to plant the seeds and in which types of soil, etc. We just threw them all down to see what would come up. Later we would learn that broccoli should be planted earlier in the spring and that strawberries don't do well in our soil that's full of clay. And despite the squirrels who stole our sunflower and pumpkin seeds twice, our harvest hasn't been so bad.
Here's what came up:
Cherry and grape tomatoes did well. Jackson and Liam both enjoy picking them off the vine and both have tried soooo hard to like them. They'll pop them in their mouths and give a grimmace. Jackson will muster a non-convincing "They're good!?!" and then spit it out while Liam will just spit them out.
I already mentioned the lettuce...although it was bitter to eat.
All of the beautiful broccoli plants produced one floret (see the picture).
The cucumber plants are still producing oddball shaped cukes. They start out like cute little pickles but something happens to them.
Asparagus never quite made it...real skinny.
And finally, we got two teeny carrots from our packet of seeds. I wasn't even sure they were carrots when they came up so I was pleasantly surprised when we dug them up with a shovel. The boys thought that was way cool.
